Reading Shakespeare's Richard III With My 6 Year Old

The Utah Shakespearean Festival is the dream up a summer night, Romeo and Juliet, Richard III and in the summer. Lindsay did some work for the festival, will receive two tickets to the game of your choice. Lindsay believes he could enjoy our daughter 6 years old, Abish, one of the works. Six may seem small, but I read some Shakespeare Abish, and enjoyment.

When asked what works Abish like to see, she replied, without hesitation, "Richard III", I thought, "Do you really want to have my 6-year-old Richard III? Complex political conspiracy ... the fickle woman. .. a lot of murder ... the murder of children ... to scare ghosts. Romeo and Juliet has violence and teen suicide, but she knows the story. The dream of a summer night seems to be the most benign ... maybe a bit of bestiality on the subconscious level ... Why give an option? "

"You have read The Dream of a Summer Night," he said. Romeo and Juliet is a kind of intense, but you know what happens in it. "

"Richard III", he exclaimed again.

After much thought, I said, "I'll take you to Richard III, but we have to read first." This is not meant as a deterrent, as they sit to read with me, but I thought it would help to better understand the drama, and allow me to process adult material with him. Actually, I've been reading quite hairy Abish material for many years. He even played Othello. My reservations mainly to actually see the violence portrayed by talented actors emotionally charged. Richard III is quite dark.

This morning, Abish and read the first two scenes together. I have read all of the first scene, because Abish just want to read parts of women. The second scene contains Richard wooing of Lady Anne. Lady Anne Abish parts is very well read. Affected, including sadness, anger, and smooth lines that seemed to demand. She has more than a few words. I gently corrected her when she did. She laughed at many lines of comic book led me, and seemed, with some explanation, to follow the plot too.

I enjoyed the opportunity to discuss with creepy men Abish. Richard meets with Lady Anne. It also flatters his vanity. Anne Richard wants to use for political and financial benefits. Not really loves her. He manages to bring Anna to his dead father in law. Richard also killed the former husband of Anne. This led to a discussion of how men are sometimes women who use them for his own pleasure. Discussion included the observation that feelings of love often arise from our own foolish pride, rather than noble passions and affections of a person. The argument ended, of course, his father says Abish to filter all their boyfriends and potential partners through good ol 'dad. Of course, this was said tongue in cheek, but she said that.
